Service Information
The Wandal Community Garden Day Service operates to support adults with a disability to work side by side with other people in their community who share an interest in gardening, growing and processing of food plants, the preparation of garden produce, and the principles of permaculture including water conservation and recycling. Our service delivery reflects the Queensland Disability Service Standards.
Our goals:
- To provide opportunities for skill development, social contact, learning, and community collaboration through a community-based permaculture garden.
- To ensure that all garden activities will be planned to be inclusive and reflect the strengths, interests and challenges of each person participating in the project.
- To encourage community participation through a volunteer membership program to support the development and maintenance of the Wandal Community Garden.
Day Service
Our Day Service is now fully operational. We have planned lots of fun garden activities for our clients such as planting seeds, weeding, watering plants, preparing garden beds, re-potting, and plenty more. When there is a day where we could not do activities outdoors, that does not mean that the clients could not come to the Day Service. We have prepared some indoor activities such as web browsing, cooking, origami, kirigami, drawing and colouring in.
We are open:
- Monday – Thursday 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
- Friday 8:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
- Saturday 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
- We do not operate on Public Holidays
- We are closed between Christmas and New Year
Our sessions are 3 ½ hours:
Morning 8:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Afternoon 1:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
If you are interested in joining the Day Service, please contact the Department of Community - Disability Services Intake Officer at 07 4938 6013
Garden
The Wandal Community Garden provides:
· A valuable opportunity for people in our community to participate in gardening activities
· To learn about food production based on permaculture principles and sustainable systems and
· To develop natural friendships, share skills as well as gain knowledge and experiences.
Who can become a volunteer member?
Volunteer members will be people who are interested in working together to develop an inclusive community garden project. This includes people of all ages, all abilities, and all cultural backgrounds. The WCG will also be a place where children will work with adults to develop their interest and knowledge about growing food plants. However, all children coming to the WCG must be supported by an adult who can be responsible for their safety.
The project is located within a diverse and multiethnic community and we wish to reflect this by encouraging people from a wide range of interests, abilities, and backgrounds to participate.
Volunteers complete a simple registration form in order to become a member of the WCG project.
The Wandal Community Garden is open to the public, Monday to Friday 8:30 am to 4:30 pm and Saturday 8:30 am to 12:00 pm. Come and enjoy the garden, meet up with our garden volunteers and the Day Service clients. You are welcome to collect the produce from our garden with only a gold coin donation.
